Officer Amy Oetter has just made history in the city of Omaha, as she's the first woman to earn police motorcycle certification. Oetter and five other officers graduated from the two-week program yesterday, which started out with 10 officers. The other four officers, who were all men, didn't make the cut.
"It’s the hardest thing I've done in my law enforcement career as far as training goes," Oetter said. "It was physically demanding, it was mentally draining. Ibuprofen was my friend, ice was my friend."
Not only is Oetter the first woman in Omaha to earn police motorcycle certification, but she's the first in the entire region to achieve the feat. Despite this fact, she doesn't think of herself as a much of a pioneer.
"I think there are areas in law enforcement where women have proven we belong in the area, and this is one area where we had not broken through and I'm thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to succeed in that area. I don't know about a pioneer, but it's a pretty awesome accomplishment," she said.
Oetter's final score for the course, which included holding up and controlling a 900-pound bike, was 92 percent. She placed third out of all ten officers in her class.
