The 2010 Portland AHRMA Classic

On the last day of April 2010, Portland International Raceway (PIR to locals) will open the gates on the 2010 Portland AHRMA Classic in PortlandAHRMAClassic_flyer_mainthe Rose City of Portland, Oregon. The event will run through the weekend (30 April, 1 – 2 May) and features a full schedule of events – not a moment will be wasted. It even includes three off-site event parties, will raise money for some local good causes, and will work at achieving carbon neutral status.

Of course, the focus of the weekend will be the American Historic Race Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) racing at PIR. There will be practice all through the mornings of each day and the racing runs from around 12 to 5PM on Saturday and Sunday. And, there are so many classes that you will need one of the programs to keep up with what is on the track during any of the many race disciplines on display – vintage and historic road racing, vintage motocross, scooter racing, and even a trials competition. The local Formula 160 (F-160, or CB-160 to some) racing is always a center of seriously good racing no matter which track they are running on. In this category it is truly the rider who can make the difference between a podium and a slow ride into the pits. Of course, you could always bring yourself a ‘cheetah’ machine with, say, a CB200 front end, but you will pay for it later.

As for the off-track events, the first one will be a benefit for the US TT Foundation – a group making an attempt at putting an American on the podium at the Isle of Man TT. This year they will be sponsoring Jimmy Moore in the 29 May – 12 June 2010 event. This fundraising party will be held at local Ducati-Aprilia-MV Agusta dealer MotoCorsa. On Saturday, racers and race volunteers will gather at another well-known motorcycle-friendly diner and bar in downtown Portland, Kelly’s Olympian. The final off-site event will be a MotoGP viewing party at Holman’s Restaurant for all who are interested in watching even more racing and maybe talking shop with some of the local race team members.

All proceeds will be split among several supported charities. Among them are the Oregon Motorcycle Road Racing Association (OMRRA) Injured Riders Fund, The Red Flag Fund, the AHRMA Benevolent Fund, Friends of PIR, The Road Racing World Air Fence Fund, and the Portland Motorcycle Citizen Advisory Committee. So, your passion for motorcycles will go on to help many others who have dedicated their lives to this great sport of ours.

If the racing is not your only interest, you will have plenty of off-track activities from which to choose. There will be vendors all over the paddock area, a swap meet on Saturday and Sunday, a vintage bike show on Sunday, and several demonstrations, including a stunt show provided by Full Tilt Riders. If you have the ability to attend this Pacific Northwest event, you will not be disappointed; not even the area’s notoriously unpredictable weather will stop the 2010 Portland AHRMA Classic. Get there if you can!
