Despite the fact that 2007's Ghost Rider was panned by critics, Disney execs are scrambling to get a sequel in production as soon as possible. If production hasn't started by November 14, the rights to the character revert back to Marvel. They've already come up with a crap-tastic title, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, and now all that's left to do is get a cast together. Not surprisingly, that may be easier said than done.
The studio's first choice is Nicolas Cage, who had the starring role in Ghost Rider. However, Cage is broker than Lindsay Lohan right now, so he'll probably chase the money being offered to him to reprise his role in the National Treasure franchise. Unfortunately, the two movies are mutually exclusive, as the production schedules will clash with each other.
Even without Cage, the movie will likely get made. However, he's not the only one who isn't coming back: Eva Mendes isn't interested in reprising her role as Cage's rediscovered love, nor will Mark Steven Johnson be back to direct. So, why film a sequel at all?
Columbia Pictures is trying to fast track the movie to fast track some cash into the company's bank account. Even though critics hated Easy Rider, the rest of the world seemed to disagree. The flick scored $230 million worldwide at the box office, not including revenue from DVD and licensed merchandise sales.
All About Bikes readers have commented in the past about hating Sons of Anarchy -- do ya'll feel the same about Easy Rider? Is anyone looking forward to the sequel, or is it just the studio's desperate attempt to get some easy money? Let us know what you think in the comments section!
