Harley-Davidson Sets Its Sights on the Indian Market Hot

Harley_guyEarlier this week, we told you about how Hero Honda has been taking over the booming Indian market for motorcycles. Now, Harley-Davidson is looking to get a piece of the action. As of this year, the people of India can own their very own Harleys, as showrooms are opening in the cities of New Delhi, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Hyderabad and Mumbai.

Harley-Davidson has been able to import their bikes to the country since 2007, when the Indian government authorized operations in the country. Harley held back, however, since the import duty on each bike was over 100 percent (and you thought taxes where you live were bad!).

Although the import taxes are still in place, Harley decided to forge ahead anyway and introduce 12 models from its 2010 lineup to the Indian public. Is this a smart move? Will the revenues be worth the added taxes? Only time will tell, but we'll watch the story closely and bring you any updates.

Harley figured a way around the taxes by having the bikes disasembled before they ship them, then having them assembled on Indian soil, side-stepping the tarriff. This may sound redundant but it's cheaper than the tax and it keeps the UAW happy, yes, H-D is Union.

Fantastic idea where the average per capita income is less than $1000 USD.
