Harley-Davidson 2011 Models - Three New Bikes Hit the Line PDF Print E-mail
Written by Dan Evon

Year after year, Harley-Davidson improves, invents, and redesigns motorcycles for its annual motorcycle lineup. Some models are shortly retired, while others live on the Harley Davidson floor for years to come. This year, Harley is adding three new models to its lineup for 2011. The SuperLow, the XR1200X, and the Road Glide Ultra.

With three new models in the lineup, Harley now boosts 32 options for riders who want to hop on theese iconic hogs. Harley-Davidson has models aimed at urban riders, long haulers, weekend warriors and everyone between. And with Sturgis coming up, it wouldn't be surprising to see a lucky few riding a new SuperLow down those South Dakota roads.

harley_superlow The SuperLow - For the past few years, Harley has been trying to encourage women and new riders to hop on a Harley-Davidson, without alienating its veteran crowd. The Superlow is a near perfect cross between a stable, manageable ride, and a mean, powerful look.

The SuperLow has a deep comfortable bucket seat that sits just 25.5 inches above the ground, and redesigned handlebars for a natural, and easy-to-control position. The entire front of the SuperLow was redesigned with a smaller tire size and a new front fork angle that make the SuperLow an easy bike for anyone to hop on and take off.

harley_xr1200x The XR1200X - If you're looking for a more extreme ride, Harley-Davidson's new XR1200X delivers. The XR1200X builds off of its successful Sportser predesecors, adding fully adjustable Showa suspension in the front and back, improved breaks, and full floating rotors.

The Showa suspensions will let riders pick the ride they want, adjusting to height, weight, and road conditions, dialing in 'outstanding feedback and smooth action.' But what really makes the XR1200X kick is the tried and true XL Evolution 1200cc V Twin engine. 74 lb - ft of toque at 4000 rpm and a blacked out look make the XR100X a powerful and mean looking machine.

harley_cvoroadglide CVO Road Glide Ultra - Speed is fine for a time, but if you're in it for the long haul, the CVO Road Glide Ultra can eat up highway miles with the best of them. The Road Glide Ultra is a deluxe touring machine, that could make RVer's jealous of your comfort.

The Road Glide Ultra is littered with fancy features like fixed hard saddlebags with remote control locks and interior lighting. A 12-volt cigarette lighter for electronics. Wind deflectors, heated seats, GPS mounts, CB/intercom with built in XM radio. The Road Glide Ultra has everything you need as well as everything you want in a touring motorcycle.

True Evel: The Amazing Story of Evel Knievel at the Harley-Davidson Museum

Special Exhibit Runs July 10 Through September 6

Milwaukee (April 29, 2010) Marking the 35th anniversary of Evel Knievel’s famous Wembley Stadium jump in London on May 26, 1975, the Harley-Davidson Museum will host True Evel: The Amazing Story of Evel Knievel, this summer celebrating the iconic stuntman’s life and legend.

During his seminal attempt to jump 13 London buses, Knievel crashed on the landing, broke his pelvis, and announced a brief retirement to 90,000 fans following the event, although he later staged several other high-profile jumps. Acts like this cemented the legendary showman’s persona, which inspired people around the world including generations of would-be backyard daredevils and professional stunters alike, still reverberates today.

“Like so many other kids growing up in the 1970s, I was a big fan of Evel Knievel, and I am thrilled to bring this exhibit celebrating his amazing life and career to a new audience. His spirit resonates with people of all ages, and there definitely is a little Evel in all of us, even if you’ve never ridden a motorcycle,” said Bill Davidson, Vice President of the Harley-Davidson Museum.

In that spirit, the Harley-Davidson Museum invites visitors this summer to an exhibit that celebrates America’s favorite daredevil through an exclusive, first-of-its-kind temporary exhibition – the largest the Museum has ever presented.

Setting numerous death-defying feats over his career, Knievel’s bike of choice was the Harley-Davidson XR-750 and he was sponsored by the Motor Company through most of the 1970s.  From Knievel’s early start as a side-show character in Butte, Montana, to his transformation into a larger-than-life master showman, marketer, and folk hero with international appeal, the 10,000-square-foot exhibit will engage visitors with the story of the man behind the seemingly fearless performer.

Visitors will see legendary pieces including his signature leathers and cane, personal photographs and letters, collectors’ toys and memorabilia, and the rocket-inspired Skycycle X-2 used in Knievel’s infamous 1974 attempt to jump Idaho’s Snake River Canyon.

The exhibit runs July 10 through September 6 and tells the story of Evel Knievel through fascinating artifacts drawn from both the Harley-Davidson Archives and the Knievel family collection. For more information about the True Evel exhibit or the Harley-Davidson Museum, log onto h-dmuseum.com/visit.

Harley Helps Haiti - 28 Motorcycles Sent for Relief PDF Print E-mail

Harley-Davidson The earthquake in Haiti has inspired relief efforts across the globe. From celebrities to politicians to 8-year old boys in London. Now, the motorcycle industry is pitching in too. Harley-Davidson is sending 28 motorcycles down to Haiti to aid in the relief effort.

The 28 motorcycles will consist mainly of Harley-Davidson model bikes but a few Buell models will make it down as well. The bikes will be sent to Harley’s dealership, MagnaMotors, in the Dominican Republic. The bikes will then be distributed to the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti.

The 28 motorcycles will stay with the Haitian Government after the relief efforts have been completed

“Our thoughts are with all of those affected by this devastating disaster in Haiti.” says Rod Copes, Harley-Davidson’s senior vice president of international sales and business development. “As the relief and stabilization efforts continue, motorcycles can often offer a higher degree of maneuverability and access than other types of vehicles.”

Harley-Davidson sales have been down this year and it had to shut down and liquidate its Buell branch. It is good to see that the American motorcycle company still has its generous nature intact.

The low 26-inch single seat puts you close to the ground. When you grab hold of the handlebars and look forward all you will see is the road ahead of you.

The Tri Glide and Street Glide trikes will start being assembled this summer at the York Vehicle Operations facility in York, Pa. “The restructuring of Harley-Davidson’s York operations provides the opportunity for us to build trikes in-house and streamline trike assembly and distribution,” said Julie Chichlowski, Harley-Davidson’s Director of P&A Trike Platform Parts and Accessories. “Lehman Trikes has been a responsive, high-quality supplier to Harley-Davidson for trikes and it has been a pleasure to work with them.”

Lehman will continue to build their own brand-name trikes, and also provide conversion kits and accessories for Honda, Suzuki and Victory motorcycles.

Bruce Rossmeyer

Harley-Davidson Tycoon Bruce Rossmeyer, 66, owner of the largest chain of self-named Harley dealerships in the world, died Thursday, July 30, on a Wyoming highway while riding out to the Sturgis biker rally in South Dakota.

Reports say Rossmeyer was riding in a motorcycle caravan when he collided with a SUV. Rossmeyer and friends were passing the SUV, which was pulling a camper, when the fatal incident occurred. Reports say the driver of the SUV didn’t see Rossmeyer, who was riding at the back of the pack when the SUV strayed into his lane. Additional details about the incident have not been released.

Passionate about motorcycles, Rossmeyer’s name will always be synonymous with The Motor Company. His history is unprecedented; in 1994, Rossmeyer purchased his first Harley dealership after being quite successful as a car dealer in Daytona, Florida’s biker capital. What started out as a side job and hobby selling Harleys turned into one of the largest names in Harley-Davidson culture.

He then began building his Harley Empire in South Florida, opening dealerships in New Smyrna Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach, as well as expanding into Colorado, Massachusetts, Mississippi and the Graceland-themed dealership in Memphis, Tenn.

Harley Davidson: Riding into the Heart of Darkness, the Iron 883 relies on the rebellious minimalist style, but with a price tag the younger generation of riders can afford.

Ron Lieback
AllAboutBikes.com Staff Writer

All About Bikes HD Iron

The Harley-Davidson Iron 883 was built with two major goals in mind: attract a younger audience and a low price point. With its dark, blacked-out style beckoning to the old Bobber days of the Greatest Generation, attracting today’s younger generation is not a problem. And at $7,899, the 883 is economic friendly, especially for a Harley-Davidson. Also, the Iron 883 is offered through The Motor Company’s “Ride Free” trade-in guarantee program; if you purchased any ’08 or ’09 Sportster (excluding XR-1200) before March 31, 2009 and trade it within a year of purchase, the full MSRP will be credited towards any Dyna, Softail, VRSC or Touring model. Not bad at all, right?
