Kurt Sutter: The Man Behind The Anarchy Hot

Kurt Sutter, creator of FX's Sons of Anarchy and his wife Katety Sagal.

Features Info

Kurt Sutter, the creator of Sons of Anarchy, is a 46-year old New Jersey native who grew up near Rahway State Prison. He tried his hand acting -- first in New York, then in Los Angeles -- but found his calling off camera when he was hired as a staff writer for FX’s The Shield in 2002. The Harley-Davidson rider created Sons after spending time with biker gangs in Northern California, he’s said.

Sons of Anarchy

Sons of Anarchy debuted on FX in September of 2008 and it shot out of the gate to become a cult hit. Now, it averages about 5 million viewers, who tune in for the beatdowns and general bad behavior of the fictional Sons of Anarchy Northern California motorcycle club.

The series stars Charlie Hunnam and Katey Sagal, the former lead on Fox’s Married... With Children who is Sutter’s wife in real life.

“Like most people, I had a preconceived notion of bikers being hard asses or teddy bears on Harleys,” Sutter said to the Wall Street Journal in 2009. “I was moved by the sense of loyalty. Brotherhood to the club had precedent over everything: personal lives, the community, the laws of the land. Everything else fell behind.”

SOA Season 5

Upcoming in Season 5 for "Sons," Hunnam's Jax is now the leader and despite being shot up, Ron Perlman's Clay is still alive. We suspect he's going to be in an ornery mood. Chuck Zito, another one whom Sutter has butted heads with in the past, will play a renegade biker on Season 5.

Kurt Sutter's "Outlaw Empires"

Kurt Sutter’s new Discovery Channel series Outlaw Empires, 10 p.m. EST Mondays, examines, in documentary style, gang life.

SAMCRO vs. The Laffing Devils

Sutter recently took a shot at Discovery’s new reality show The Devils Ride, which follows the drama of the Laffing Devils motorcycle club in San Diego. “Watched Devils Ride,” Sutter tweeted on May 21. “Probably get in trouble for saying this, but I’m pretty sure my SOA actors could kick the shit out of this ‘real’ MC.”

That didn’t sit well with the Laffing Devils.

“Here’s a reality check for ya Kurt ... I am sending a personal invitation to your pretty faced Kurt Cobain look-alike star Jax to come down to San Diego and prove your point,” said Laffing Devils member Sandman.
