Euro Cruisers – Not a Pretty Sight! Hot

DucatiIndianaMotorcycle designers from across the big pond have sculpted some of the most beautiful motorcycles in the world – with one glaring exception. European manufacturers consistently miss the boat when delving into the cruiser niche. Most Euro-cruisers are just plain…well, ugly!

There is little doubt why the European manufacturers occasionally dabble in the cruiser genre. They eye the market share enjoyed by Harley-Davidson with more than a little envy. While the Japanese have had some limited success in the imitation, it just seems that European flair does not translate well to the very American phenomenon of the cruiser.

Let’s take a look at some of the most glaring examples of these European eye-sores.

The Ducati Indiana

We are going back in time here (like 30 years), but no discussion on the ugly Euro-cruiser would be complete without a look at this Italian monstrosity. Even the attempt to appeal to middle-America with its name is sadly forced. It had a cool, desmodromic L-twin engine; but that 650cc motor could not save the terminally ugly bike. It's so bad I had to make it the lead photo in this piece.

The Moto Guzzi California

GuzziDo you see the trend here? Another Italian offering employed an Americanized name - the California. It is not as obvious what is wrong with the looks of the California. Maybe it’s the overly rounded motif, or maybe it’s the fact that the otherwise cool Guzzi power-plant looks fatally out of place in the cruiser attempt.

The BMW R1200C

bmwIt is much clearer what doesn’t work in the styling of the R1200C. Even a high-profile appearance in a James Bond movie, couldn’t override the ugly that envelops this German cruiser offering. The bike is an uncomfortable mix of German engineering and pseudo-American cruiserdom.

TriumphSo the question remains: Has any European manufacturer gotten the cruiser right? Yes.

Triumph has developed arguably the coolest non-American cruiser in the world. The Triumph Rocket has taken Euro-cruiser styling (not to mention performance) to a new level. Maybe there is a hope for the European cruiser market after all.

Your eyesight must be as lousy as your useless opinion about the R1200C. That bike is a moving sculpture, and has more class and beauty in its muffler than you have in your whole body. Educate yourself before you start spouting off this bullshit next time. Or better yet, start writing reviews on toothpaste rather than bikes. Maybe you'll do a better job.

I agree 100% with this article. There isn't a bike out there that can compare with the looks of my Softail Deluxe.

Well, maybe except for the thousands of Softail Deluxes out there that look JUST LIKE YOURS and all the other similar bikes out there!

It appears to me that Harley started it, the japanese smooted out the ride, now the euros are trying to sleek the lines... Bikes come and go but styling is in the eye of the beholder. Myself I think Goldwings are to big and bulky, to me they look like a car on two wheels, as for the new Can-Am Spyder.. it's a novelty now, but time will tell if it will stay or go the way of the cotton... which in my mind was a good bike... same way with the euro style cruiser,it may stay it may go, I guess that is why there are so many styles of bikes, if we all rode the same thing life would be pretty boreing...

BMW has always been the 'thinking man's' way to ride ... superb engineering, their styling is usual way ahead of it's time. That's how the R1200C already entered the rank of collectible bikes; whereas H-D not only resigned themselves to simply play with colours & accessories, they also haven't yet managed to design their engines to last beyond 30.000 miles without a complete rebuild (as recommended by H-D. Obviously H-D think their machined have done seriously hard work 'IF' they reach that mile stone. Ha! Hang on, they did get it right once!! yep, that's when they got the Germans to re-design their VROD engine ..... smooth as silk now! Again - hahahaha!

Anyone defending H-D on engineering, reliability or design grounds - is obviously just wanking around (self satisfying activity).
BMW bikes offer more comfort, economy, reliability, daring design, peace-of-mind, heaps more bang-for-the-buck .... it's not even a contest.
You're just trying to pass your delusions on to others. Will only work for idiots who'd also qualify for the 'Darwin Award'. You lot deserve it. :-)

I ride a Guzzi Jackal....a stripped down California, which I have cleaaned up even more. I get compliments from Harley guys, and lots of folks like the way the motor sits because it has a muscular look.

My Guzzi Jackal gets lots of compliments, even from Harley guys....I can't do the same for the BMW folks, though.....I think the BMW cruiser is too goofy looking.

I largely agree with the article, with the exception of the Rocket 3. If you want to see a European cruiser that hits the mark, look instead to the Triumph Speedmaster, or the new Thunderbird. Cruisers are about style, and they are a uniquely American phenom, so to hit the mark, it has to hit the right audience. The BMW is a beautiful piece of engineering, but an utter failure on a stylistic level as it goes too far in one shot. It's a collectors item because not many were made since the demand was nil. It's about the market, not the high tech engineering you can bring to it. Harley knows its market. It takes small, evolutionary steps in styling because they know who they are selling to. BMW took a shot at it, and missed because they weren't styling toward the cruiser market properly, and they missed their own loyal customers by building something they didn't want.

We ride what we ride. It is ours to decide, Some people will not go with the flow and chose a different form of transportation. The rest will drink the Kool-Aid and fall for the sales pitch.
"Doesn't know about bikes" would be a more fitting head line here.

You're entitled to your opinion, but the 30k rebuild is 100% B.S. ...get a clue.

What? You never said what that was. Nor do you sign your article.

This is nothing more than an opinion piece.
Don't feed the troll.
Ride what you want and enjoy it when you do.

Maybe that's why it's in the "Op-Ed" section. Duh.

Even as a long time BMW rider, I have to agree that the 1200C looks like an "uncomfortable mix".

It's funny, I ride my R1200C and receive lots of compliments. It's higher quality than an HD, rides smoother than an HD, and gets more compliments. My friends ride some nice looking Harleys and buy all kinds of accessories so they don't all look alike and I do not see them getting compliments on their bikes. I have someone checking out my motorcycle almost every time I gas up. HDs are NOT better motorcycles and they DO require much more maintenance whether at 30,000 miles or not. AND my BMW does not leak oil, many HDs do. But if you're just buying a lifestyle rather than a good motorcycle - have at it!

The line that BMW R1200C is ugly is simply laughable.
They don't display ugly motorcycles in Guggenheim Museum in New York City, and in pretty much each and every books about classic motorcycles.
