The Safety Series - Watching Out for Distracted Drivers

The confines of four walls signifies to some that they have the privacy to do whatever they want. Give those four walls power steering and cruise control, and there hardly seems to be any reason to watch the road. As a motorcyclist, you have to expect that. The world is full of bad, distracted drivers that will aim their car in your direction on a whim.

You cannot trust drivers to watch out for you. If there is an accident, whether it is your fault or not, you are going to be the one that gets injured or worse. Here are some tips to keep you safe from distracted drivers.

Be visible.

Clothing -The best thing that you can do while on the road is to make sure that you are visible. Motorcycles are half the size of small cars and can easily disappear in blind spots. You have to make sure that you and your bike are as visible as can be.

The easiest way to do this is to wear highly visible clothing. Most motorcyclist wear dark leathers, and this can make them hard to see, especially at night. But you do not have to trade in your leathers, you can just add a little bit of neon flair to your outfit. There are many high-viz vests out there that you can throw over your jacket. You might also consider getting a white, or brightly colored helmet to match your neon vest.

If you’re a rider that objects to this safe but tacky look, you’ve got a lot of other options. A lot of riders choose to add the visibility factor directly to their bikes.

Lights- Years ago, motorcycles solved the problem of visibility with daytime lights. But day lights are common now on cars, and don’t help you to stand out as much anymore. Many riders choose to punch up their bikes with modulating headlights, or added auxiliary lights. There are tons of different modifications that you can do to your lighting system that will make your bike stand out in traffic.

Another lighting technique that you can use without having to do any sort of electrical work, is flashing your brake lights when you are slowing down. Hit the brake four or five times when you are slowing down if you can. It’s a small thing, but it might help to catch the eye of a distracted driver.

Riding Techniques

You need to ride to get noticed. Falling into the humdrum of stop-and-go traffic can erase you from a distracted drivers sight. You need to make sure that you stand out.

The best way to do this is to ride in places where you are going to be seen. A drivers blind spots are typically directly to their sides, and extend to about 45 degrees in front of them. Try not to ride in this area. Its impossible to never enter a drivers blind spot zone, but you shouldn’t make a habit of camping out in these problem areas.

Also, changing lanes is a good thing. You don’t have to be a maniac, but adding a little movement to your ride is a good thing. Highway drivers often tune the road out because there isn’t enough movement. They forget about the cars around them, the road in front of them, and lose themselves in thought (or lack thereof). This is called motion camouflage and occurs when moving objects stay on the same path for an extended period of time.

Another good technique is to use hand signals. Remember hand signals? Left arm up, left arm out, manually signaling which way you are going to move. It might look ridiculous but it works. You can even throw on a pair of reflective gloves to make sure that you stick out. You might hear a little snickering from the car behind you, but it could help you to avoid hearing the sound of metal on metal on bone on pavement.

Be Defensive.

No matter how big and tough you really are, you are the little guy when it comes to traffic. You need to drive defensively. Everything on the road is a threat to you, even those damn Priuses.

When you are riding, you have to assume that all of the other cars on the road are worrying about something that isn’t you. Do not expect them to get out of your way, or to see you approaching in the mirror.

Be alert, be visible, and be safe.
