It may not be the most thrilling of topics, but chances are we've all experienced discomfort to our "backside" while riding. It's a comfort to know (pun intended) that there are many options to make the seat of your motorcycle more suited to your body.
A Fit for Everyone
We're all built differently, and stock seats are less than adequate most of the time. Riding with an uncomfortable seat can be not only a pain in the rear, but also a safety hazard. If you're in pain or riding with poor posture, you're likely to react slower or shift your posture to make yourself more comfortable – and compromise the balance of your bike in the process.
The best option is to have a professional customize the motorcycle seat so it fits you and prevents the type of pain you experience. However, that can be very costly.
The good news is that there are many cost-effective options that work almost as well. Whether you ride a street bike, a cruiser, a touring bike, or a standard motorcycle, these types of motorcycle pads will relieve painful "biker butt":
- Air: These types of pads have eggshell-like air pockets that increase circulation and allow your butt to "float."
- Sheepskin: Sheepskin pads are great for those who want to be cool in the summer and warm in the winter. They are a 'jack of all trades,' because they ventilate, insulate, cushion, and wick away moisture. This option isn't expensive and is very versatile, but it is not the top option for increasing circulation.
- Wooden Beads: As much as it seems like a laughable option, wooden beads actually do wonders to circulate air and keep you from sweating in the summer. They are one of the cheapest options and won't break the bank if yours is lost or stolen, and they are very portable.
- Gel: Gel pads are also very popular and have been compared to a water bed for the seat of your bike. While a gel pad encased in fabric can make you feel like you're shifting or slipping – a disconcerting feeling at first – it increases comfort and is great for cross-country touring. This option has many fashionable models as well.
- Foam: Foam pads will upgrade you from a stock seat, but it won't do as much as the other types of pads. However, you may want to use a foam pad as a backup if you have several bikes.
