Getting Girls in the Race

It turns out, there's a place for ladies in the world of motocross (besides being a trophy girl).  At least, that's what Kelsey Green hopes. At 13, her father took her to her first race. Shortly thereafter, she was hooked on the sport and asked her dad to buy her a bike. 

Currently at York College for grad school, Green is looking to place in the top eight for her next regional qualifying race so that she can enter the AMA Air Nautiques Amateur National Motocross Championships in Tennessee this August. Beyond her own personal racing goals, she's also trying to get young women in on the action by taking some time out of her training to teach other girls the sport of motocross.

"I just wanted to broaden the sport for girls," Green said. "A lot of girls ride at their house or woods. There is a pro women's series. It's getting as big for the girls as it is for the guys, but I don't think it will ever be as big. I think that was my whole reasoning, to broaden the spectrum for girls. There are girls who do it every weekend like myself, and I wanted to get more to do it. When I first started, there was two other girls who raced," Green continued. "One took me under her wing and taught me a few things once in a while. It would have been cool to come out to a school, and that would have been helpful."

This year, she expects around 25 students in her class.
