Your Hair in the Wind…or Not Hot

hairAbout this time last year I had to ride an hour on a motorcycle to a photoshoot…not the most ideal prep to try and look your best. While I’m not the girliest girl around, I do still like my hair to be presentable when I whip off my helmet, so I have compiled some suggestions on how to keep your locks composed even after long rides.

I have thick hair with a natural wave so I try not to fight that. Before riding I coat on the leave-in conditioner and a little root booster to add extra body to the top that will be pressed down by my helmet and protection to the ends that will be exposed to the elements. I leave my hair down until I get geared up at which point I use a band to put my hair back in a low, twisted bun. The bun ensures no ends will be left to wave and undoubtedly split, in the wind and the twist gives my hair some body and movement when I reach my destination and take off my helmet.

hair2I have friends with straight or thin hair and they normally side towards the pigtail braids, which offer similar benefits to their style as my method does to mine. For straight hair you could also try using several bands evenly spaced down your pony tail, keeping the bulk of it together in one…err…tail.

There are also a few “biker chick” accessories you can try out if that’s your style. There is of course the standard bandana style wrap to cover the top of your head. There are also wraps that cover and enclose the length of your ponytail –some come in studded leather, if that’s your thing. Like most things related to feminine aesthetics, your hair can remain attractive; it just takes a bit of effort and planning. Don’t fight what your hair wants to do naturally and take the right steps to make sure your hair is silky and sexy when you remove your helmet at your destination.
