On a recent trip to West Virginia I stayed a night at the Smoke Hole Cabins near Petersburg in Seneca Rocks, WV. If you love to fish and ride your bike on some very twisty beautiful roads, this is a place to come.
Based in the mountain highland region located in the Seneca Rocks/Spruce Knob National Recreational area, it’s an excellent location to set up and enjoy some remarkable riding.
In the morning I rode over the Canaan Valley back to Morgantown, which is about a 2.5 hour ride over the top of the mountain. The climb was steep and the switch backs as you come up over the top really are spectacular. On the top is a state of the art wind farm generating power that you can see in the distance for miles. When you do finally get to the wind mills you can really appreciate the engineering that has gone into them, they are huge.
Josh Hedrick’s, the son of the owner and one of the developers of the resort, is a very accomplished fisherman and engineer. It goes to show in the system he has installed around the resort. Redirecting the stream from the opposite side of route 55, he feeds a pond stocked to the hilt with different colored trout.
For a fee you can actually fish in the pond as long as you take them out when you catch them. Couples get married next to the pond in this very tranquil setting, and the open space and views are really quite peaceful.
They have various formations of cabins; all with a water view, jacuzzi’s, open log fireplaces, and flat screen TV’s. The main building is also a log cabin that holds the shop, reception, and a wonderful outdoor patio. The cabins are very comfortable and the family buildings can sleep up to 8 people at a time.
The location is perfect as a base for riding your motorcycle in West Virginia. You can get anywhere from here, its well worth a visit and the evening rates won’t break the bank.
So while you’re travelling in WV, don’t hesitate to stop at the Smoke Hole Resort and say Julian sent you. Using my name might get you special treatment, it also might get you thrown out of the place, but roll the dice, it’s worth it.
