Many modern motorcycle jackets are marvels of muti-functionality. They have all the protective and venting traits that motorcyclists expect. In addition, they most often offer some level of water protection. That is all well and good, but if you ride in jeans or a pair of Kevlar and armor reinforced denim pants, that leaves your legs vulnerable in wet weather. I have taken to packing rain pants under my seat for wet weather readiness; and the pants that reside there are the Alpinestars RP-5.
Since I most often ride in armored denim jeans, I wanted a roomy, attractive, and functional pair of rain pants to pull over them. I liked the styling of the Alpinestars RP-5s so I ordered a pair. I have been more than happy. First, the cut of pants seems perfect for a rain overpant. They make for easy entry, but are still cut close enough that they don’t flap and billow in fast riding conditions. I also like the fact that they are predominately gray with nice black panels on the inside of the legs. I have had all-black rain pants and they are just too sweaty when the sun comes out.
The construction of the RP-5 pants is on par with Alpinestars’ usual high quality. The interior features a nice, lightweight mesh lining. The outer material is a heavyweight, coated ripstop nylon, with secure seams that are both taped and sewn for durability. A subtle and attractive Alpinestars logo is screen-printed on each leg. I also really like the generous cargo pocket on the left thigh.
The pants are available in sizes small through 3XL. For your reference, I am 6’3” and 235 lbs and the size XL is a perfect fit in the waist and the legs are plenty long in the riding position. The waist is secured by a generous elastic band and the leg openings are adjustable via a zipper.
If you are in the market for a solid, good-looking pair of rain pants, you will not be disappointed in the Alpinestars RP-5. They are well-made and compact enough when rolled to stow just about anywhere. A nice bonus is that they are affordable at only $40. Alpinestars also offers a matching rain jacket.
