Putting on your favourite make-up before a bike ride, and hoping that it’s still there after you remove your helmet, is very unlikely in most cases! In fact, like most women, I think I have literally spent the past 4 or 5 years sub consciously searching for the perfect helmet-safe make-up. Well, I have found it!
Okay, so it’s not often that you find me putting foundation on my face before I put my lid on but, there are times when I have to do important ‘business’ related trips that involve looking half decent, and sometimes the bike is my only choice. So I stumbled into Boots about a week ago to top up on my pressed powder and got a little carried away (it can happen you know!). I decided to treat myself to some new products including foundation, eye shadow, mascara, concealer and my powder – Why the ‘eck not!
I usually use Rimmel or Maybelline Foundation, I don’t know why, I never bothered to ask myself that question – Until last week. I had a good look around and decided to actually stay and try the products out before I bought them. I came across Max Factor Lasting Performance foundation, and it was good. Really good. I mean, usually when you apply foundation you’re not often surprised with the results, but with this one, I was sold!
So without further ado, I decided to also change my powder. I must admit, it is still Rimmel, but I picked up the Stay Matte Pressed Powder when I usually go for an invisible one. I picked up a few other products that include Maybelline XXL Pro mascara, a few eye shadows of different brands, and some concealer. By this time, I had to ask a friend to drag me out of the store before I got too carried away!
We all know what it is like when you buy new make-up. All you want to do is try the stuff on! But, I held back until a suitable bike journey came up. A few days later, I had a succession of 4 days solid at a bike show of which I could test my new make-up with – Risky I know, but it had to be done!
I put the Make-up on, foundation, powder, eye shadow, mascara and eye liner, stuck my lid on, got on my bike and hit the bike show. It takes roughly 25 minutes to get there and I ride with my visor up 99% of the time so I am fighting the elements too. Once I got to the bike show, I went straight to the ladies and checked the results. Perfect. Every inch of my make-up was exactly as I had done it.
The test didn’t stop there though! Without re-applying the Make-up at all throughout the day, I also decided to see just how resilient this make-up was by doing the same thing on the way home. Again, it was just as I had done it first thing in the morning.
So to conclude, I put the make-up on early am, say around 7:30. I put my lid on for 25-30 minutes, I walked around and did my thing for roughly 9 hours, put my helmet back on for another 25-30 minutes, and when I got home, it was the same as when I left – And I did this 4 times. Result? I think so!

Let me recommend (please know, I am not in any way affiliated with these products, just a happy customer):
First, Urban Decay's eyeshadow primer. This keeps your eye makeup on, no matter what (even a dip in a pool, I am not kidding) -- I like their original or "Eden" shades. Urban Decay's eyeshadows are high-pigment gorgeousness. For less sparkle, Tarina Tarantino's eyeshadows are spectacular.
NARS and Make Up Forever make liquid foundations that stay put all day and do not look like you're wearing makeup. They are miracles. NARS' cream blushes also have amazing staying power.
Seriously, there is a LOT of helmet-proof makeup out there, and WAY better than Maybelline.
