Arai and Shoei make top-notch dual sport helmets. The problem is that not everyone can afford a $500 lid. If you are looking for a nice, versatile DS helmet at a more affordable price, take a look at the Joe Rocket RKT Hybrid helmet. It has a lot of the features of the pricier DS helmets at a more affordable price point. The RKT can be had for well under $200.
Versatility is the key with modern dual-sport and adventure riding and the Joe Rocket RKT Hybrid does not disappoint. It has an integrated pivot shield like most of the other DS helmets on the market. A nice thing about Rocket’s design is that goggles can be worn with the shield in the retracted position. Not all DS helmets offer this feature. The shield is fully adjustable with or without the visor mounted, and is 95% UV resistant.
Ventilation is well-designed and effective. Rocket calls the system "ACS" (Advanced Channeling System), and it does flow a lot of air. Comfort is enhanced by an effective humidity wicking and odor eliminating nylex interior.
The helmet’s shape and the visor design resist undue lift at speed, but for true high speed riding, the visor should be removed. The RKT is DOT approved and available in three colors and a full range of sizes. However, here is a strong warning: many riders report that this helmet runs substantially on the large side. Keep this in mind when ordering.
