I became intrigued by the SparX S-07 helmet for a number of reasons. It is a helmet that has been getting very positive reviews from buyers. It is also a helmet that has both features and build quality that belie its low price point.
However, it’s a helmet that has sparked debate on motorcycle related discussion sites. Even here at AAB it was included (accurately so) in a list of helmets that failed to meet DOT standards after they were sold on dealer shelves. This is what sparked my interest, as the helmet meets the tougher ECE-2205 standard. I did further research and found that the helmet did, in fact, fail a 2008 DOT inspection. However, it failed because it was missing a DOT required label that warns against using chemicals that may compromise the integrity of any helmet. It was a labeling oversight, not a production or performance issue.
Whereas AAB gave accurate information, another magazine editorialized that the SparX company was offering unsafe, cheap helmets. To this, the SparX replied, in part:
“Despite what some might tell you, we know you don't have to pay $400+ to get a well made, top certified helmet and we would STRONGLY refute any notion that if you can’t afford an expensive helmet to protect your head, you should find a cheaper sport. We do not buy into this sort of elitist mentality since we KNOW as an experienced helmet manufacturer that this is simply not true. If you happen to be lucky enough where money is no obstacle to buy the equipment you desire and you prefer to use only the most expensive helmets available (or you are in a position where you don’t have to pay for them at all), you are the privileged few. SparX was built as a safe, quality alternative for everyone else.”
So is it a good helmet? My impressions are very positive. The overall quality of the helmet, both internally and externally, is superior to other helmets I have sampled in this price category. The interior is plush and comfortable. If you have a head that fits Shoeis well (intermediate oval), you will like the S-07’s shape. Ventilation is well designed and effective (though the top intake vents are not adjustable). I found the helmet to be quieter than the majority of the helmets I’ve reviewed lately.
The fit and operation of the shield is solid. The shield includes Arai-style vents, but its tool-less removal system is more like a Shoei. The helmet is very light – the XL weighs in at about 1570 grams. Finally, the paint and graphics are outstanding.
Okay, so I like most of what I’ve tested on this helmet…a lot. However, there is still that elephant in the room. Do I have qualms about that technicality on which it failed a DOT test a couple of years back? No, I don’t have any such concerns. Do I think it’s a safe helmet? Yes, without any reservations. I would wear this helmet myself.
In short, the SparX S-07 is a really good, affordable helmet. It is my hope that some bad initial press will not unduly hurt a company that is making a sincere effort to produce a quality helmet at an affordable price. You can get a graphics model for under $150 and a solid for around $100. It is offered in sizes XS – 2XL.
