I have not worn an open face helmet for years. My face may not be much, but it’s all I have so I want it protected. However, there are times when I’d like to shoot a quick photo, or talk to a gas station attendant without taking off my helmet. In times like these, a good modular helmet would be just the ticket.
One of the most respected modular (also known as flip-up) helmets on the market is the Shoei Multitec. I have to admit, I am a Shoei fan. I have sampled and owned helmets by virtually all of the top lid makers. However, I repeatedly come back to Shoei. That being said, I am somewhat resistant to making the leap to a modular helmet…even a Shoei. I guess my qualms stem from several things. First, modular helmets are, by nature, heavier than fixed-chin full face helmets. Secondly, there are all of those hinges, seals and latches. Finally, modular helmets have traditionally not met Snell safety certification.
Now, what makes the Shoei Multitec such a popular choice for flip-up users? First, build quality is pure Shoei. The function of the movement of the chin-bar is smooth, and the latch mechanism is easy to use and confidence inspiring. The shell design and seal make this a reasonably quiet helmet. Ventilation is effective with an upper scoop-style air intake. Fogging is reduced by the lower chin vents.
Another thing that I like about the Multitec is that it has a subtle, clean look when closed. At first glance, it is not easy to identify it as a flip-up. Some of the new modular designs look like something from Star Wars – not the Shoei.
I am starting to think the Multitec is a helmet I could live with. However, I do have two significant qualms. First, the Shoei weighs in at over 1700 grams. For comparison, the Shoei Vandal that I recently reviewed for All About Bikes weighs only 1250 grams. That is a substantial difference. Also, the liner of the Multitec is not fully removable. Only the cheek pads can be removed and washed. I have become a huge fan of a fully removable liner.
In the end, the Shoei Multitec is a great helmet. If the convenience of the flip-up design outweighs (no pun intended) the slight drawbacks for you, give this premium helmet a look.
The Multitec comes in sizes XS through XL. The retail price is $480 - $495.
