The Van Buren Sisters' Transcontinental Ride

On July 4th of 1916, Addie and Gussie Van Buren, two young women from "New York Society" set out from New York City on a pair of 1000 cc twin Indian Model F motorcycles. On September 8th, they arrived in Los Angeles.  Not only were the Van Buren sisters the first women to ride more than 5,500 miles from coast to coast across the United States unescorted, but they did it before the advent of interstate highways and in most places even paved roads.
