Listen to me. If you are relatively new to motorcycling, start wearing ear plugs now. I spent years riding screaming dirt bikes, howling sport bikes, and thumping twins without ear plugs. I am now paying the price.
In reality, it’s not only the bike’s engine that does the damage; it’s also the significant wind noise at higher speeds. For the last decade or so, I have been on a quest to save the hearing I have left. To this end, I have tested a plethora of ear plugs.
For my ears, the Hearos (get the creative spelling?) are a great plug. Hearos come in a number of varieties. Ultimate Softness Hearos and Xtreme Hearos are the models most often used in motorcycle applications. There are important differences between the two. The Ultimate Softness Hearos have a high noise reduction rating (NRR) of 32. The Xtreme Hearos have a NNR of 33, and have a noticeably larger diameter. Diameter is important because everyone’s ear is different. The diameter of the Xtreme Hearos may be perfect for one rider, and may be too bulky for another. That's why you have to experiment to see what works for you.
My experience is that Hearo plugs are a great product that fit well and are comfortable. Price and quantity vary by model, but you can get over a dozen Hearos for around $5.
