In the modern world in which we live, technology has done many beneficial things for those of us on two wheels. We now have motorcycles which are far beyond any performance standards that the early design engineers of the 20th century could imagine. Modern bikes have powerful computers which would put the entire computing power of the Apollo mission to the Moon to shame. We also have the exceptionally useful GPS to get us from point A to Point B and just about everywhere in between. There are now affordable emergency airlift memberships which will take you via helicopter to the hospital best equipped for your type of injuries after an unfortunate accident. However, what if you have a medical allergy
or you have a medical condition which requires specific treatments – how do you let the medical personnel working on you know this if you are both unconscious and, possibly, alone? Unless you have prepared for this, you can do nothing in that state and you must hope that luck and fortune are on your side; that is not a very solid plan for a long and fulfilling life…
Having something attached to your person - which securely holds your important medical information - can truly be the difference between life and death. UTAG, an English company, has developed the perfect solution for riders, travelers, adventurers and just about anyone else who needs to have a medical condition known in the event of an emergency. The UTAG idea came from a man who spent much of his life in very dangerous locales and wanted – rather, needed - to have that important health information close at hand in a form which would readily indicate what was contained within. He also wanted this device in a very visible location so that emergency personnel could easily locate and read it. Thus came the UTAG Digital Dogtag, which is essentially an aluminum USB key drive that is designed to be worn around the neck and securely contain your important personal medical information.
The UTAG Dogtag is made with a high-quality aluminum alloy and uses a magnetic closure to keep the USB port locked into the tag itself. It looks very similar to military type dogtags issued by armies the world over – the obvious inspiration for the designer of the UTAG – and carries the international medical symbol (the snake and staff) with I – C – E (In Case of Emergency) writ large across the front. The
Dogtag’s USB drive contains all of your important information without the need for a power source, is guaranteed to keep it safe for over ten years, and is compatible with USB version 1.1, 2.0 and Windows ME, 2000, XP, Vista and 7. The software provided for inputting your personal data will instantly translate into seven European languages (English, French, German, Dutch, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese) for those who truly do go international. No matter where you ride, though, you will at least have an English version of that important data just in case you need it – only the most remote outpost of civilization is without a USB-capable computer.
UTAG now makes two more versions of this life-saving accessory, the UTAG Credit Card and the UTAG Sports. The Credit Card, as the name implies, is a credit card sized version (2 1/8 X 3 1/3 inches / 54 X 85mm) of the Dogtag which contains the same information using the same security.
It will easily fit in an ID holder or in your wallet. The UTAG Sports is again very similar to the Dogtag, but it is a much smaller form factor and is designed to be worn on the wrist. Though, the Sports does have a pre-drilled hole for mounting on a chain around the neck as a sort of ‘mini’ Dogtag, or wherever it will be visible and remain safe.
There are other ways of keeping your medical data with you when you travel the roads far away from or close by your home, but the UTAG Dogtag certainly has an advantage over most of them. It is easily portable, is very durable and secure, and it weighs next to nothing. There really is no reason why you do not have one of these UTAG devices; it could easily save your life!
